Companies are trying to become more productive and therefore more competitive in the world marketplace. In the pursuit of productivity, many members of the workforce are facing uncertain times. Uncertainty about the future in the workplace can lead to turmoil. Even veteran employees are searching for guidance; fearing merges, restructuring, corporate divestitures etc. Employees' fear and uncertainty will perpetuate turmoil until they recognize a sense of security. Communication will be the key, a higher level of communication. The handbook is a powerful first step.

The Employee Handbook should explain itself as an informal summary of policies. The handbook should be reviewed periodically and updates sent to everyone.

However, the handbook should be given to every new employee on the first day of work. The new employee has one week to go through it and sign a paper indicating that she/he has read the handbook and understood its contents. The employee handbook should also contain the policy on harassment and on sexual harassment.

There may be a separate handbook for managers or exempt employees. Policies may change significantly such as in the case of sick leave. Policies also differ based upon the organization's benefit package.

Aside from the topics addressed in this publication, there is a list of topics that different employees may choose to include in their organization's employee handbook.
